TOOL - Lateralus

Well, It’s apparent that Tool will never be the same. If you need proof, look no further than Lateralus, the brand new CD out from Tool.  While the album is still the greatest Hard Rock album I’ve heard in four years, I still find it necessary to inform you that the sound of this CD is something different.  I find it even more mature and thought out than anything I’ve heard before.  Yes, it is possible, while at the same time amazing, Tool has managed to evolve even further after Ænima.  Of course, as I said before, it has been four years and this is Tool and there is still a lot of acid available in L.A. But regardless of how amazing it may seem, it has happened, and Tool is more mature and the album is so fucking great.

While none of the songs are too identical, most manage to be similar in a variety of ways.  Including bizarre and lengthy intros, softly sung song opening that slowly and almost unexpectedly burst into aggressive spasms of emotion.  I find that every song seems to slowly convey a message to me by painting a tranquil picture in my mind, only to rattle me back out of my comfort zone.  And it’s that variation, experiencing the ups and downs, highs and lows of the CD that keep me listening. Every high threatens me, yet manages to pull me closer at the same time, followed by I tight clinging to every low waiting for the next stimulating high.  Tool is a great drug, and on so many levels.  I haven’t even begun to talk about the actual music yet, which kicks ass.  Every guitar part reminds me that Adam is a God, all Danny’s Drumming some how strangely reminds me of nature and being in the woods during a storm, Maynard’s voice drives the whole thing and brings the acid trip feeling to full power and I don’t know about you, but I felt that the bass on this CD seems so much more alive… but I think that’s just Justin rubbing it in my face that I’m not him and that he’s better than me and that I have to like it.

Of course, that’s no struggle, after only listening twice to the album it began to make sense to me.  Like most of the songs, the CD is mostly a collection of seemingly disjointed beats and rhythms that seem to make no sense at first.  But as you listen again the pieces slowly fall into place and the CD comes alive and expresses itself fully.  Some of the better songs include the extra heavy Ticks & Leeches [which still manages a 1:10 into], the singles Lateralis [not Lateralus, just like Ænema/Ænima] and Schism, the tracks Disposition, The Grudge and Reflection are also really great, but my personal favourites include Parabola and it’s 3 minute intro Parabol and the meandering Triad.

Of course, I may be over emphasizing how really, really, really fantastic Lateralus is.  I mean, was there anyone who would assume that it would be bad? No. No one did. Why? Because Tool never disappoints and they are the greatest hard rock band ever and this CD is 79 minutes if the greatest music since Ænima.  IF you don’t have it, you had better buy Lateralus now.

RAZOR\\06.09.01-Turns out that the name 'Lateralis' was a big fat stinky typo.  As far as I've been able to find out, the track 'Lateralis' was supposed to be 'Lateralus', as a title track.  I think 'Lateralis', along with my explanation makes a better story, but hey... am I TOOL? Maybe...
