Visual Audio Sensory Theater - VAST

Usually when I buy CDs from bands I know nothing about, I fare pretty well.  Unfortunately, I screw up sometimes and buy a CD that I thought I'd like, but the album turns out to be total crap.  I guess VAST is one of those CDs. After hearing one of their songs on a sampler, I decided that I liked them.  After buying and listening to their CD, I discovered that there really wasn't much to like about them.  It was disappointing, really, that they couldn't live up to their single.

VAST screams "experience me" is a sort of neo-genesis and enlightenment type way.  This theming matches their music, which falls into that techno/world music category.  A genre that very few musicians can make interesting and worth listening to.  It's a sad shame that a band with imagery and a name like VAST can't.  Most of the music is pretty mellow and soaked in the same type of cold, empty loneliness you'd find on a Moby, Icon of Coil or Stabbing Westward CD, only it sometimes performed in a way that makes you want to cringe, just because some songs are so unenjoyable.  Thankfully, the CD has a few gems that make the album worth having, these songs are usually a bit more constructed than the others, and they don't have weird screaming.  The better songs on this CD would be Touched, Temptation, and Three Doors.  Other than that, the album is mostly poor singing and bad music.

Crosby [who does most of the work as a vocalist, and a composer] decides sometimes, that he just doesn't want to sing along with the music... so he mumbles in an off key singing voice.  Other times he will wail very bad lyrics at the top of his lungs.  At times like this, it's hard not to laugh or just break the CD.  Crosby also has an obsession with Jesus, which shows up in the album art and in many of the songs.  Even this attempt to make the CD have substance is screwed up. It's sad; how can you screw up being Christian so badly?

Some VAST is good, but the rest is just a joke.  Someone may like it, somewhere, but I couldn't tell you why. If you want to experience them nonetheless, download the tracks "Touched", "Temptation", "Somewhere Else to Be" and "Three Doors", and avoid spending your cash on this one.
